Let’s be real—choosing the right images for your website can feel like trying to pick the perfect outfit for an ex’s wedding. It’s a bit overwhelming and high-stakes. But here’s the deal: when you get your imagery right, it’s like finding the perfect dress—it just works. Today, I’m here to help you pick visuals that not only look good but also do some serious heavy lifting for your brand.

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of image selection, let’s talk about why this matters. Visual storytelling is one of the most powerful tools you have for building a brand that connects. It’s not just about picking pretty pictures—it’s about curating a collection that tells your story, evokes emotion, and speaks directly to your audience. The right visuals can capture your brand’s essence and help you attract your dream clients. So, how do you make this happen? Let’s break it down.

1. Why Imagery Matters (Like, A Lot)
You’ve heard it a million times: a picture’s worth a thousand words. But on your website, it’s worth a whole lot more—think credibility, connection, and conversions. Your images are the first thing people see, so they need to make an impact, tell your story, and get people to stick around. No pressure, right? 😂
2. Curating Images That Look (and Feel) Like Your Brand
Tip 1: Consistency is the Key to Success
Your website should feel like flipping through a magazine (Think: Magnolia or a 2000’s copy of Cosmo). From your colors and fonts to the style of your photos, everything needs to flow. Whether your vibe is cozy and inviting or sleek and modern, make sure every image aligns with that look and feel. The best way to stay on track is take breaks after each page and then come back to it - you’d be surprised what you thought looked good an hour ago!
Tip 2: Make Them Feel Something
Your images should evoke emotion. I watch a lot of movies and take notes on what scenes make me feel something. I carry that into the process while I’m curating images for a project. Are you aiming for your audience to feel inspired, relaxed, or ready to take action? Choose visuals that match that mood and make your visitors feel like you just get them.
Tip 3: Less is More (Seriously)
Don’t overwhelm your site with a gazillion images. Think of each photo as a visual exclamation point. You only need a few strong images to tell your story—so choose wisely and make every one count. Think of it like sitting in a theater for three hours when the movie really only needed to be two - your butt is sore, your popcorn is long gone, and you’ve been holding your pee since the middle of the movie. Not fun times.
3. Strategic Placement: Because Just Like in Real Estate, Location Matters
Homepage: This is your big moment. Choose a hero image that captures attention and instantly communicates your brand’s message. Think of it as your website’s first handshake—firm, friendly, and unforgettable.
Service or Portfolio Pages: Showcase your work or products like they’re the stars of a red-carpet event. Use high-quality images that highlight the details and benefits of what you offer. This is really important because you want to make sure that you’re not just choosing great images, you want to choose the best out of a sea of great images.
About Page: Time to get personal. Use images that tell your story—show your face (sorry fellow introverts - I’m right here with you), your workspace (time to declutter!), your favorite coffee spot (finally the fun stuff). People connect with people, so let them see the real you. My best advice is to hire a professional photographer that you connect with and can make you feel like the camera isn’t there. You also want to ditch the pants suit. Go spend a day at Disneyland, get your surf on, take a pottery class, make a pizza or cookies at home with your family! Pick something you love and have that be the focus. You’ll be able to get images that capture your personality for days, while also having fun, and you’ll be way more relaxed. Trust me 😉
4. Optimize for Speed and SEO: Because Nobody Likes Waiting
Slow websites are like slow drivers in the fast lane—they make people want to bail. Compress your images to keep your site speedy and don’t forget those alt tags. They’re like secret SEO sauce, helping your site get found by search engines (and making it accessible to everyone). I love JPEG mini for this very reason. It’s a small investment, but honestly it’s so worth it! When I was shooting weddings I needed to make sure that my photos weren’t sucking the life out of my site and driving traffic away. It was really important to have fast loading times without compromising on the integrity of my images.
5. Finding High-Quality Images That Don’t Scream “Stock Photo”
Can’t splurge on a custom shoot just yet? No problem! Stock photos can look amazing if you know where to look. At Odyssey Haus, we’ve curated collections that feel fresh, unique, and anything but generic. I really wanted to add stock photos into our business because I know how hard it is to find good stock photos that don’t suck (and aren’t a million dollars!) I love photography and it made sense to offer this to our peeps (yea…I’m talking about you!)
Remember, your website’s images aren’t just there to look pretty—they’re here to tell your story, set the mood, and help you connect with your audience. Whether you’re choosing photos of yourself, your work, or dreamy landscapes, make sure they’re doing more than just filling space. Pick images that resonate, inspire, and ultimately, make your visitors fall in love with your brand.
Pro-Tip: Add your images into a gallery on your phone, canva, or a website like Pixiset (you can create a free account!) so you can see how they coexist all together! This makes it really easy to pick out the ones that just don’t fit with the overall vibe you’re going for and serve your brand story.
Happy curating!!
